Calabria is the southernmost region of the Italian mainland. It is one of the oldest wine-growing areas and today comprises about 24,350 hectares of vineyards. Over 90% of the region's wine production is red wine, mainly from the Gaglioppo grape. Only 4% of the yearly production is classified as DOC wine.
Calabria offers a wide range of traditional, local main grape varieties whose potential has only been recognized in recent years. The most famous wine is the Cirò.
