Latium

In the region of Lazio vines are planted on approx. 48,000 hectares. Viticulture goes back to ancient roman times. Many of the 200 approved varietals derived from ancient grape varieties
On the coast the climate is hot and dry but towards the inland it becomes increasingly cooler and more humid. The volcanic soils provide good conditions, especially for white wines. The varieties Malvasia and Trebbiano and their numerous variations form the basis... The most important red varieties are Cesanese, Sangiovese and Montepulciano. International varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are gaining importance.
