Umbria region with its 16.500 hectares of vineyards, not only borders to Tuscany but is scenically very similar. The rainy winter months are detached from sunny and warm summer months and together with calcareous clay and sandy soils lay the foundations for the cultivation of vine and olives. Around two thirds of the production is Orvieto or Orvieto Classico. The major red grape varieties are Sagrantino, Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo and Montepulciano.
